SVNO Announces New Freight Tracking

The SVNO has just announced that they will be rolling out a new tracking and dispatching system. The system will use a digital asset tracking system, and allow Conductors to use tablets with interactive freight manifests to manage their consists and movements. The tablets will also allow them to handle trackage rights. This is similar to PTC, but is being termed PTC-Lite, because the system is aimed at regional fright systems on low traffic lines. This system is not meant for passenger PTC service.

The locomotives will be equipted with GPS tracking, mobile phone modems and wifi.

The online system will allow manifests to be altered on the fly, and will allow for ahead of time scheduling. Allowing dispatchers to see what freight cars are on the move, and pre-plan their next move before the rail cars even reach their next destination / yard.
